The actual phrase "cardio" refers to exercise that raises your heart rate for an extended duration of time.
When you raise your heart rate, your body is required to breath faster, resulting in more oxygen being pumped to the rest of your body. This process is also known as aerobic exercise, getting your blood pumping and oxygen flowing.
In order to maximize the benefits of cardio, it is recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week.
